Band Camp Preparations

Band Camp is hard work, tiring, and rewarding!

Please take note of these helpful tips:

·       Hyrdate, Hydrate, Hydrate.  Increase water intake several days before camp and maintain it throughout. Bring water everywhere and refill your water jug frequently.  Sports drinks that replenish electrolytes are favorites during hot days. Avoid energy drinks, coffee, soft drinks and others that contain caffeine, which accelerates dehydration.

·       Focus on Food and Nutrition. You’ll need well-balanced meals with sustaining protein and energy-laden carbs.  Bring your favorite healthy snacks and eat during breaks, spreading your food intake.  Avoid sugary snacks and dairy products for breakfast and lunch.

·       Acclimate to Heat and Check the Weather.  The July forecast includes hot temperatures and high humidity.  Practice is on asphalt or artificial turf, which absorbs heat and increase temperatures.  Experienced band members, alumni and parents agree: Start a few hours of walking or other outdoor activity daily in early July to help with conditioning and readiness.

·       Get into a Camp Routine & Get Sleep.  Beginning at least a week before camp, set the alarm and allow a leisurely pace for waking, eating, and other preparations.  Don’t wait until Day 1 of camp to learn how much time this all takes, then arrive late, unprepared or unfed.  Remember, you have to be early to be on-time! Sleep is imperative! Your body and your brain will work hard and it will need time to recuperate. Go to bed early and get at least 8 hours of sleep!

·       Gear Up and Accessorize.  Wear comfortable light-colored (avoid black or dark colors) clothing and comfortable closed-toe tennis/athletic shoes (no flip-flops or crocs).  Other recommended items include filled water jugs, hat or cap, sunglasses, sunscreen (reapplied throughout the day), thick socks, comfortable shoes, support insoles, hydration packs, and towels.

·       Positive Attitudes and Great Work Ethic.  Get up in the morning with enough time to not feel rushed and arrive early to camp. This will set you up for success, allow you to preparre physcially and mentally, and even socialize. The best part of band camp is working hard together - be encouraging, get help when you need it, and strive to constantly get better at your skills.

·       Check the BAND App and Notifications.  Check the BAND App for updates, goals for the day, location or time changes, or other important items. Be sure your BAND App is updated and that the notifciations are TURNED ON!
